Here we are with another week behind us, friends! I hope everyone is doing well and being gentle with themselves. These days, I think it's more important than ever to remember to be kind to others, of course, but to also be kind to ourselves.

As is the way of things here, please do share your week's ups and downs and any changes in goals you may have in mind. There's never any judgement, just support and encouragement, so never fear to share.

My Week in Review )

I began bleeding around 8.30 in the morning. I got a new icon to represent moontime, isn't it amazingly apt? :D

I recently found out that someone in my city makes OEKO-TEX certified biodegradable sanitary pads (so they've been third party tested free of a bunch of harmful chemicals). She's been doing it for 6 years and I only found out about it now, but I'm happy I found out about it at all! She's using the profits to combat period poverty in my state, and to fund research into menstrual health.

She offered to deliver the pads to me via a dropoff service, but since it's within my city I said I'd come by and pick them up. Along with the pads she gave me a feast of mangoes from the tree in her yard! She said she was going away with her family for the summer, and was taking all the mangoes down from the tree beforehand so that they wouldn't rot and fall in her absence.

It was so sweet and generous and made my month!

I just recently returned from a health-related hiatus and thought I'd like to meet a couple new people :)

Name:
Tina.
Age: Freshly turned 38 six days ago!

I mostly post about: My daily life and musings. Sometimes I also post surveys/memes, will share a song I found if I think my friends are going to like it and I do a weekly "What are you reading Wednesday?" post. My personal entries often contain pictures, but if there are more than three of them, I'll put the rest of them under a cut to spare your reading list.

My hobbies are: Reading, listening to music, hanging out with friends, taking walks, playing Pokémon Go (yes, "still"), taking pictures, going to concerts (when I can afford it), travelling (same), cuddling my cat, doing word searches, jigsaw puzzles.
My fandoms are: I don't really have any? I mean, I am a "fan" in the sense of liking things but I don't read/write fanfiction or the like. I don't have anything against fandom culture, in fact I love how passionate and creative people get about it! I just never got into it personally.

I'm looking to meet people who: are kind, empathetic, understand that life isn't always sunshine and puppies, and have a sense of humour. Shared interests are a plus, but not necessary - I have made some great friends on here who I have almost nothing in common with. I also find it so intriguing to learn about what people love and what makes them so passionate about it!
My posting schedule tends to be: I try to post at least once a week (not counting the "Reading Wednesday" entry). Same with commenting on my flist, if I have enough spoons.

When I add people, my dealbreakers are: The usual (anti-feminism, queer-/transphobia, racism etc.). Both extreme zionists and anti-semites. I have been going through some health struggles in the past year or so (both physical and mental) and want to feel free to whine on my journal sometimes, so if you are a person who doesn't like "too much negativity", you might want to give me a pass. I don't mean to be an asshole, it's just that I am never sure where the line to "too much" would be crossed and in the end, either of us could get uncomfortable. I hope that makes sense?

Please also give me a pass if you think that autism spectrum disorders and/or ADHD are "overdiagnosed" or self-diagnosis isn't valid. I am very possibly on the spectrum myself and have been trying to seek an official diagnosis for years but it seems nigh impossible where I am, so this is a sensitive topic for me.

Lastly, I unfortunately have a tendency to put my foot in my mouth or just phrase things badly, which has lead to misunderstandings/drama before. So please, if I ever say something that ends up offending you, try to give me the benefit of the doubt and talk to me about it. I never intend to hurt anyone, and if I do, will apologize and do my best to make up for it. Sometimes I will just not realize I was being offensive, and I truly even appreciate the learning experience!

Before adding me, you should know:
I think I've pretty much covered that above? Just wanted to say that I might sound "complicated" or unapproachable, but in reality I am really quite nice and love getting to know people from all walks of life. Please do comment on here before adding me, thank you so much ♥

Media Roundup: Food and Friendship

I’ve been saving up these notes until I finish some of the longer things and that means they’ve been getting fewer and further between. But I do have more to say about each thing!

Five Worlds by Mark Siegel, Alexis Siegel, Xanthe Bouma, Matt Rockefeller, and Boya Sun— This series of five MG science fantasy graphic novels. There are multiple moons that the characters travel between and also magic which makes for a fun mix. Three children must go on a quest together to save the world. Occasionally the problems they face are a little too parallel to those of our world. For example their worlds are heating up, and it's going to be a disaster if no one does anything. And I found the similarities a little stressful. But mostly the story was lot of fun, with cool worldbuilding. The art is really good, very colorful and fun, but also surprisingly easy to follow what is going on from panel to panel even when the action gets complicated. The environments and backgrounds are also really good.

Superman vs. Meshi by Satoshi Miyagawa, Kai Kitago (Illustrator), Wes Abbott (Letterer), trans Sheldon Drzka— So you know those slice of life manga where everyone goes on in detail about how good the food is? This is one of those with Superman as the main character. He’s become obsessed with Japanese chain restaurants and so goes to Japan on his lunch breaks – it’s very cute.

Superman is so excited to eat food! One time he got confused about which kanji was for beef and which was for pork which I found very relatable. He also brings his fellow superheroes and family to come eat with him resulting in some cute moments. (thought I can not suspend my disbelief to believe that a bunch of old people from Kannas would be happy to sit on the floor and eat sushi)

I think this is much more successful as a foodie slice of life manga than it is as a superhero comic, but I don’t really think it's trying to be a superhero comic. (But if someone came to this expecting more typical superhero stuff they would probably be confused)

Content notes: Fat phobia - mostly off hand comments about gaining weight, but there was one issue where it was more of focus. Also non consensual memory wiping

Let's Eat Together, Aki and Haru, vol 1 by Makoto Taji, trans Unknow— Reading Superman vs Meshi made me want to read more slice of life manga, so I picked up this one about two college roommates eating together. It’s tagged a yaoi so I think they’ll get together at some point but right now it's just gentle pinning and blushing. Since this is about college students is about simple and easy foods, and there are recipes. It's cute and charming.

Batgirl vol 3 (2009) by Bryan Q. Miller et al.— I have a lot of feelings about Stephine Brown – some of which have to do with her political/fandom history. The first time I learned that there had been more than one Robin was years ago reading discourse about her death, and I just feel fiercely protective of her. All this is to say that I was excited to read this series where she is the star!

It’s fun! I don’t love the way it sets up a “Steph has always been a fuck up" narrative (That doesn’t track with my reading of earlier comics, though I did skip War Games) But otherwise I really like this version of Steph. And I love seeing her working together with and being supported by other women!

Cozy fantasy anthology!!!!

The cozy fantasy anthology that I'm part of is out now! You'll be able to read my story, Dollshops & Deathmages, and four others which all have the theme of forced proximity. You can get the anthology for free here. It's free because it's a reader magnet (so in exchange for getting the book, you'll be signing up for the author newsletters of the authors featured in the anthology, but you can unsubscribe later if you want to.)

Dollshops & Deathmages is about Melna, who crafts dolls and prefers them to people, and Clariel, a deathmage who is isolated because of his profession. They get trapped together in Melna's giant dollhouse, which could be disastrous given they're both (involuntary) habitual loners. But Melna is surprised that Clariel doesn't think dolls are frivolities like other men she's known, and Clariel is surprised that Melna doesn't think he's lame for wanting a doll of his own. And both of them are surprised that sometimes someone specific is nice company, even if you are stuck together.

I got the anthology onto my Kobo and started reading it at once, and of course, found two typos in my own story that I didn't catch before despite my previous editing and proofreading. It's some comfort to me that after the anthology has run its course, I can re-release my story separately, on its own. I'll take the chance to correct these then. If they niggle me in the back of my mind meanwhile, I'll have to live with that :/

I'm especially excited to read Thea Hawthorne's contribution to the anthology, because I've read some of her other work which was atmospherically cozy-spooky and had deep yet unobtrusive worldbuilding. I'm looking forward to the other stories to discover some new-to-me authors, too. Most of the fiction I read these days leans cozy, my nervous system right now prefers it. So I'd like to find more cozy authors. On that note, let me know your cozy fantasy recommendations! I've read the classics like Legends & Lattes, and I have my favourite authors whose backlist I peruse, like Celia Lake and Stephanie Burgis. I'd also love cozy recs without fantasy; I recently read D. E. Stevenson's Miss Buncle's Book and enjoyed that a lot.

Greetings, friends. Today for [community profile] 3weeks4dreamwidth I bring you not a Kingdom of Knuffel avatar, but a Wild Knuffel. Wild Knuffel are adoptables made by users, for users! Anyone who wants to try their hand at art and use the Knuffel base to draw on can create one, and submit them for release. Once released, other users can adopt them.

Here's one made by user HanafuruLove. When I told her that I'd adopted him, she saw that I'd named him 'Too Cool for Skool' and she found that hilarious

It's possible to click on the preview box above if you're curious about seeing him in his full glory (all the details HanafuruLove added to him!) or if you want to try feeding and playing with him. I love his tattoos, piercings and of course, his skateboard. The expression on his face speaks volumes

I don't know about you, but I take comfort in the regularity of knowing that I'm going to post a report each week and hear from all of you about how you're doing. It's nice to have a relative constant and a touchstone. I hope the conversations we have in the comments give you that sense too.

As always, if you feel like sharing how your week has been, fitness-wise and/or otherwise, please do leave a comment. And, as always, know that there is never any judgement here.

I'm sending you all the energy I can for a good week to come, my friends.

[community profile] myrtillenne is one of my favourite Dreamwidth layout creators so I'm surprised at myself for finding out they made a new layout months after the fact. Nevertheless, I've changed my layout now, and changed my default icon to match the yellow accents. 😁

My grandparents have left for a short duration, and my aunt and uncle continue to stay here. I didn't post for 3w4dw the past few days (and now there's just a few days left). All my energy went towards trying to protect my energy, and now it feels as if a whirlwind has come and gone.

I changed my avatar on Kingdom of Knuffel and submitted it to this month's avatar contest.

I like how the snowballike/bubbly dress blends into the snowballike/bubbly hair. They're actually items from two different sets! It's the Doughnight '23 dress and the Drama Llama hair. The poofy little pet is from a different set too, it's the Skypuff Pet. The spell shapes in the background make it look like the pet was summoned. I built this avatar around this pet!

Speaking of pets, there are now a new set of pets you can get for your avatar and they're SO CUTE!

And you don't need in-game currency to get them, either! You can dig with your Knuffel (the site's adoptables) on Candy Island to find them.

My sister went to my dad's house the day after I did and managed to get a couple of book cases emptied. Then she called me and said, this is never going to work. They just have too much stuff and MIL has to decide what to do with every single object. It will take months.

So Plan B )

the downside of being made out of meat )

Meanwhile my house is now piled full of crap because I haven't had a chance to deal with it. The neighbourhood yard sale happens at the end of the month so a lot of it is going on a table with a sign that says "Free". The Bell techs that were supposed to show up and look at the downed wires never showed up so I need to follow up with them and I have a couple of other things around the house that I have to get fixed that will just have to wait until I have a week where I know for sure what my schedule is going to be.

***

Lord Brock got put on a new medication, a painkiller this time. He was so stoned on the first day, or maybe just dizzy. I legit thought he had had a stroke for a second when I saw him first thing in the morning, it looked like he was dragging his hind legs but it turned out his legs were fine, he was just really floppy. I had to carry him up and down the stairs all day. I also think he fell over in his litter box, I keep finding little splashes of litter and turds all over the place.

He's on a half dose as of yesterday and we'll see how it goes. He seems much more normal this morning.

He's also very excited that he now gets two daily doses of medication because that means two rounds of treats. Bliss! I should be as easy to please as a cat.

Why not? It's been a minute.

Name: Risa

Age: 37

I mostly post about: Writing, exercising, shows I'm watching, or any old thing that's on my mind.

My hobbies are: Fanfiction (reading and writing), sports (watching), anime/manga, older video games, long walks, playing with animals. I dabble in a lot of little things, but mostly, I'm a writer.

My fandoms are: WWE (specifically the little corner of tumblr that still likes The Shield. I'll never let Roman live Rolleigns or Ambreigns down) Final Fantasy IX, Persona 5, Pokemon, Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Survivor, and many others.

I'm looking to meet people who: I want a variety of people to talk to, but I'm not looking for anyone to sell me new interests or criticize my current ones. I have my own reasons for what interests me, and it doesn't matter if those reasons are superficial. I want people with a "Live and Let Live" mentality when it comes to fandom, but also, who feels comfortable leaving the occasional comment.

My posting schedule tends to be: Sporadic, but daily posting is my goal.

When I add people, my dealbreakers are: MAGA, performative activism, disagreeable/argumentative people who can't help themselves, plus anyone who makes or agrees with statements calling for the general mass harm of US American citizens (or anyone around the world, yes, but listen.) Personally, I fucking hate MAGA, never voted for the clown king regardless of what anyone else did, but I am so sick of random self-righteous assholes saying cruel shit about my country's working people. Any of my country's working people, including ones scammed into morally reprehensible work. We should be changing their minds, not calling for their harm. Yes, that work is never done and we're all tired, but consider this: there are billionaires and politicians causing real harm in real time while some people are seriously still out here policing fandoms and cancelling low hanging fruit like they're accomplishing anything. That's a fucking joke if you ask me. And you know what? You do you, but please, skip friending me if this is you.

Before adding me, you should know: I am a passionate, friendly person. I want to talk to people in a light and fun way, hang out, do fandom as chill as I can. This is stress relief from work. I don't want to treat it like an obligation or something I have to think too hard about. Naturally, there's nothing I wouldn't ask of people that I'm not willing to give in return. :)
